If you're working out how to fix curbed rims, the honest answer is that you can repair a light scuff on a painted alloy yourself with a DIY kit, as long as you take your time and the damage hasn't gone deep into the metal. Deeper gouges, an exact colour match and specialist finishes are much harder to get right at home. The Wheel Magician has been repairing curbed mag and alloy wheels in driveways and work car parks around New Zealand for around 16 years, so here is how the two options compare.

Can you fix curbed rims yourself?

Yes, if the damage is a light scuff on a standard painted alloy and you are happy to take your time over it. A shallow scrape that has only marked the paint can be sanded, primed and painted at home. Once a scrape has gouged into the metal or chewed into the edge of the rim, it needs shaping back before any paint goes on, and that is where home repairs tend to come unstuck. It's worth doing properly, because NZTA's warrant of fitness rules list an alloy wheel with poor visible repairs as a reason for rejection.

What does a DIY rim repair kit involve?

A typical kit has you sand the damage, fill any gouge with a putty, then prime, paint and clear-coat the rim by hand. Whichever guide you follow on how to fix curbed rims at home, matching the paint to your other three wheels is the hardest part, because factory finishes come in many shades of silver, grey and black. That's why The Wheel Magician mixes every colour in-house and applies it by hand with an airbrush to match the wheel in front of it, without any filler. Blending the new paint into the old so there's no visible edge takes practice too, and each coat needs time to dry before the next one goes on.

When does a DIY repair go wrong?

Usually when the paint doesn't match, the edge of the repair shows, or a quick spray-can touch-up starts to lift. Lisa Thomas, who owns The Wheel Magician, warns people off rattle-can repairs for exactly that reason: they don't last, and in time the paint flicks off the wheel. Specialist finishes are the other trap. Diamond-cut and hyper-silver wheels are very hard to reproduce exactly without a CNC lathe, so even our own technicians match them as closely as possible by hand and tell you what to expect before they start.

How is a mobile repair different from a DIY kit?

A technician comes to your home or work, repairs the wheel in the van, and you can drive away within about 90 minutes. The car is jacked up where it's parked, the wheel comes off with the tyre still fitted, and the damage is sanded back and refinished by hand with an airbrush before the wheel goes straight back on. Most standard repairs take 60 to 90 minutes, and the only rule afterwards is no washing or brushing the wheel for three days while the finish cures. Standard kerb damage starts from around $150 per wheel incl GST, depending on the damage, and you can see how mobile wheel repair works step by step before you book. If you're not sure whether a rim is too far gone, or what to check before booking, our curb rash repair guide covers both.

FAQs

Can I use a rim repair kit on diamond-cut wheels?

Not with a result you'll be happy with. A diamond-cut wheel has a bright, machined face that is cut on a lathe at the factory, and paint from a kit can't recreate that look. Our own technicians are upfront about these finishes too. John from Orakei told Zhi Lee before he started that he didn't have a diamond-tipped lathe for the exact factory finish, then got it so close you couldn't tell the wheel had been sanded and sprayed, at about half the price of a shop with that equipment. If your wheels have a diamond-cut or hyper-silver finish, send a photo with your enquiry and ask what result is realistic before anyone picks up the sandpaper, whether that's you or us.

Do you fix curbed rims on utes, vans and motorbikes?

The starting figure of around $150 per wheel is for standard residential kerb damage. Quotes climb when the damage is severe, when a specialist finish is involved, or simply because some shops price higher - customers often tell us they were quoted $250-$350 elsewhere for the same job. The work also matters: a hand-mixed, airbrushed, filler-free repair lasts, whereas a cheap rattle-can job can flick off down the track. Always check what's actually included before comparing two numbers.

Can you fix a curbed rim while I'm at work?

Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to do it. The technician comes to your office car park or a nearby parking building, repairs the wheel while you work, and you drive home on a like-new wheel. All they need is a flat place to park and a power socket, so if the car is in a parking building or a tight spot, mention where it's parked when you book. Alan Edwards brought Suhail's scratched-up mag back to new condition at his workplace while he worked. Payment can be taken on the spot by mobile EFTPOS, and our technicians turn up in clean, tidy vans and uniforms, so a repair in the work car park won't look out of place.
